Flowers of Bhutan

There are many beautiful flowers in Bhutan. Most of them grow wild, high up in the mountains. In spring the mountain sides are covered in these beautiful flowers and it is as if god threw out buckets of colors on the trees and meadows. One can find magnolias, primulas and rhododendrons and azaleas and many more. The national flower of Bhutan is the Blue Poppy, a very beautiful flower with a unique blue color.

Many people come from all over the world just to photograph the flowers. Some of these flowers are used in making indigenious medicine and for pot pourri. Some are used to make dyes for the beautiful fabrics handwoven in Bhutan. So the flowers have many uses besides being just a thing of beauty.

My personal favourite is the magnolia flowers. They bloom in early march through April on tall trees and they look so beautiful set against the bare branches with a background of snow covered mountains.
