Bhutan - an exotic destination
Travel to Bhutan, the last Shangrila. Bhutan is a small Himalayan kingdom, located in the north of India and south of Tibet. It is a beautiful country with warm hearted people.
Over the last decade, Bhutan opened its arms to visitors, yet the number of visitors are restricted each year to preserve our rich cultural and natural heritage and environment.
The people are predominately Buddhists, and speak a language called Dzongkha but also speak several dialects all over the country and english is widely spoken. The men and women proudly wear the national dress of Bhutan. For the men it is called Gho and it is a bit like the Scottish kilt whereas the women wear floor lenght robe tied at the waist and it is called Kira. All the Gho and Kiras are made of brightly coloured woven fabrics with geometric patterns.
The main staple food is rice and it is eaten three times a day, with a side dish of chillies cooked with meat or vegetables or cheese. The national dish of Bhutan is called Emma Datsi, a fiery dish consisting of several chillies and cheese, which is a bit like the cottage cheese.
My husband Kinlay is a veteran tour guide and licensed tour operator. He has had distinguished guests on his tour like the actress Glenn Close and the Rockefellers besides a lot of other people from America, some of whom have become close friends with us. When he has a visitor from abroad, we usually cook a meal at home and invite the guest to share our simple and local Bhutanese dishes and have a glimpse of the family life in Bhutan. The guests love this kind of service and he is highly recommended among his guests.
