Trekking in Bhutan

  • Many people from all over the world come to trek in Bhutan. The best season for trekking in Bhutan is in the spring months of March, April and May and the autumn months of September, October and November. In the spring months, one can see the magnificent peaks of the Himalayas and also the different flowering trees in full bloom. It is a sight to see rich colours of magnolia and rhododendron dot the mountain side. In the fall, the sky is a vast stretch of clear blue and the panorama around is stunning. During these months, the high mountain passes are not blocked with snow, but sometimes expect the unexpected snow or rain fall.

Many of the trekkers who come to trek in Bhutan are seasoned trekkers and if you are not much of a trekker, then it is advisable to stick to the short day hikes. High altitude treks last for several weeks and yaks are used to transport the trekking equipments like tents, and food. For the not so high altitude treks, horses are used as the means of transporting the equipments. A guide and cook and several trekking staff are mandatory on such treks.

While on such a trek, all you have to do is carry your prescription medicine, your glasses, rain gear, and water and enjoy the walk and scene. The trekking staff will arrange everything else, including all meals and tents. Sometimes the cook even whips up a cake complete with icing and cherries on the top for a surprise birthday party on top of the mountain.

One can also walk by high altitude lakes teeming with brown trouts and maybe even put in a bit of fly fishing with the right permit and gear. The high mountain passes are windswept and cold and Buddhists put up strings of coloured prayerflags, left to flutter in the winds and carry the message of love and peace through the valley down below. For such an experience, only second to ascenting Mt.Everest, or maybe even better, as this is definately off the beaten path- a trail less travellled, visit Bhutan.
